Portugal D7 Visa – Retirement & Passive Income Residency
Make Portugal Your New Home
Portugal is an attractive destination for Americans looking to retire abroad or enjoy a different lifestyle in Europe. With its welcoming communities, pleasant climate, quality healthcare and relatively affordable cost of living, Portugal offers an excellent opportunity to start a new chapter.
The D7 Visa, often referred to as Portugal's Retirement or Passive Income Visa, provides a pathway to Portuguese residency for non-EU citizens who have sufficient regular income to support themselves without relying on employment in Portugal.
You do not necessarily need to be officially retired to qualify. What matters is the nature, stability and sufficiency of your income.
Who Can Apply for the Portugal D7 Visa?
The D7 Visa may be suitable for individuals receiving income from sources such as:
- Retirement pensions and Social Security benefits
- Rental income from property
- Dividends and qualifying investment income
- Other regular and demonstrable passive income
Each application is assessed individually, taking into account the applicant's financial circumstances and supporting documentation.
How Much Income Do You Need for a D7 Visa in 2026?
The financial requirements are linked to Portugal's national minimum wage, currently €920 per month in 2026.
The standard reference amounts are:
| Applicant | Monthly Income |
|---|---|
| Main applicant | €920 |
| Spouse or second adult | Additional €460 |
| Each dependent child | Additional €276 |
These amounts represent the basic reference thresholds. Applicants must also demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support their intended residence in Portugal.
I generally recommend demonstrating income and savings comfortably above the minimum requirements, whenever possible.
How Does the D7 Visa Application Process Work?
For US residents, the application normally begins in the United States through the Portuguese consular jurisdiction responsible for their place of legal residence.
Step 1 – Initial Assessment
I review your financial circumstances, income sources and intended relocation plans to assess whether the D7 Visa is the most appropriate route.
Step 2 – Preparing Your Application
I guide you through the necessary documentation, including proof of income, accommodation, financial resources, health insurance and other supporting documents.
Step 3 – Applying for Your Visa
Once your application is ready, you submit it through the appropriate Portuguese consular service or authorised visa application centre.
Step 4 – Arriving in Portugal
Following visa approval, you can travel to Portugal and complete the residence permit process with AIMA, the Portuguese immigration authority.
Step 5 – Obtaining Your Residence Permit
I can assist you with preparing for your AIMA appointment and accompany you in person, helping address documentation requirements and any questions that may arise during the appointment.
Can Your Family Join You in Portugal?
Portugal provides legal routes for eligible family members to obtain residence permits.
Depending on your circumstances and the applicable immigration rules, your spouse, partner and dependent children may qualify for accompanying-family visas or family reunification.
I can advise on the most suitable procedure for your family, including the documentation and eligibility requirements.
Healthcare and Living in Portugal
Portugal has a public healthcare system, known as the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), which eligible legal residents can access subject to registration and applicable rules.
Private healthcare is also widely available, and many foreign residents choose to maintain private health insurance.
Appropriate medical or travel insurance is generally required during the visa application process.
How Long Is a Portuguese Residence Permit Valid?
The initial temporary residence permit is generally issued for two years and may subsequently be renewed for three years, provided the legal requirements continue to be met.
After five years of qualifying legal residence, applicants may become eligible to apply for permanent residence, subject to the applicable conditions, including Portuguese language requirements.
Portuguese citizenship may also become an option after the required period of legal residence, provided all nationality requirements in force at the time of application are satisfied.
Portugal generally permits dual nationality, meaning that US citizens are not ordinarily required by Portugal to renounce their American citizenship when acquiring Portuguese nationality.
