Portugal D2 Entrepreneur Visa – Start a Business and Live in Portugal

Establish Your Business and Build Your Future in Portugal

Portugal offers attractive opportunities for American entrepreneurs, business owners and independent professionals who wish to establish or expand their business activities in Europe.

The D2 Entrepreneur Visa provides a pathway to Portuguese residency for non-EU citizens intending to establish a business, invest in a Portuguese company or pursue an eligible independent professional activity in Portugal.

Whether you are planning to launch a new business, expand your existing operations or develop an independent professional activity, I can provide personalised legal assistance throughout the immigration process.

Who Can Apply for the Portugal D2 Visa?

The D2 Visa may be suitable for:

  • Entrepreneurs wishing to establish a new company in Portugal
  • Business owners planning to expand their operations into the Portuguese market
  • Investors intending to develop and actively participate in a Portuguese business
  • Self-employed professionals planning to provide services in Portugal
  • Individuals with a credible business project and sufficient resources to implement it

You do not necessarily need to have an established business in Portugal before exploring your eligibility. However, your application must demonstrate a genuine intention and credible plan to develop the proposed activity.

What Are the Requirements for a D2 Visa?

Unlike some other immigration routes, the D2 Visa does not have a single fixed minimum investment amount applicable to every applicant.

Instead, the application is assessed based on the proposed business activity, financial resources and supporting evidence.

Depending on your circumstances, the documentation may include:

  • A credible business plan outlining your proposed activity in Portugal
  • Evidence of investment already made or intended
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources to establish and operate the business
  • Evidence of adequate means of subsistence for yourself and accompanying family members
  • Portuguese company registration or other relevant business documentation, where applicable
  • Professional qualifications, contracts or evidence of previous business experience
  • Proof of suitable accommodation in Portugal
  • Appropriate medical or travel insurance
  • Criminal record documentation and other documents required by the relevant consular authority

Each application is different, and the strength and consistency of the supporting documentation are particularly important.

How Much Money Do You Need for a D2 Visa?

There is no universal minimum business investment amount for the D2 Visa.

However, applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support both their proposed business activity and their living expenses in Portugal.

For 2026, the basic reference amount for personal means of subsistence is linked to Portugal's national minimum wage of €920 per month.

For family applications, the standard reference percentages are:

Applicant Monthly Reference Amount
Main applicant €920
Additional adult €460
Each dependent child €276

These are basic reference amounts, not a guarantee of visa eligibility. The financial requirements of the proposed business are assessed separately.

I generally recommend demonstrating financial resources comfortably above the minimum thresholds, particularly when establishing a new business.

How Does the D2 Visa Application Process Work?

For US residents, the process normally begins in the United States through the Portuguese consular service or authorised visa application centre responsible for their place of legal residence.

Step 1 – Initial Consultation

I assess your business plans, financial circumstances and intended activities in Portugal to determine whether the D2 Visa is an appropriate immigration route.

Step 2 – Business and Legal Preparation

Depending on your situation, I can assist with obtaining a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF), establishing a Portuguese company, opening a local bank account and reviewing the legal documentation supporting your proposed business.

Step 3 – Preparing the Visa Application

I help you organise and review the necessary documents, ensuring that your business proposal and supporting financial evidence are clearly presented.

Step 4 – Applying for the D2 Visa

You submit your application through the competent Portuguese consular service or authorised visa application centre.

Step 5 – Arriving in Portugal

Following approval of your residence visa, you can travel to Portugal and proceed with the residence permit application.

Step 6 – AIMA Residence Permit Appointment

I can assist with preparing your residence permit documentation and accompany you to your appointment with AIMA, Portugal's immigration authority.

Can You Bring Your Family to Portugal?

The D2 Visa may provide a pathway for eligible family members to reside in Portugal.

Depending on the applicable immigration rules and individual circumstances, your spouse, partner and dependent children may qualify through accompanying-family visa procedures or family reunification.

I can advise on the appropriate procedure, financial requirements and supporting documentation for your family.

How Long Is the Portuguese Residence Permit Valid?

The initial temporary residence permit is generally issued for two years and may subsequently be renewed for three years, provided the relevant legal conditions continue to be satisfied.

After five years of qualifying legal residence, you may become eligible to apply for permanent residence, subject to the applicable requirements, including Portuguese language proficiency.

Portuguese nationality may also become available after the legally required period of residence, provided the relevant conditions in force at the time are satisfied.

Portugal generally permits dual nationality, so American citizens are not ordinarily required by Portugal to renounce their US citizenship when acquiring Portuguese nationality.

Healthcare and Living in Portugal

Portugal offers both public and private healthcare services.

Eligible legal residents can access the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS), subject to the applicable registration and access requirements.

Private healthcare and health insurance are also widely available, and appropriate medical or travel insurance is generally required during the initial visa application process.
