Under the general framework for non-EU residents, family reunification normally requires the sponsor to have held a valid residence permit for at least two years. A reduced period of fifteen months may apply to spouses or qualifying partners who meet the statutory prior-cohabitation requirement.
Exceptions apply to certain family members and residence categories, including dependent minors or persons lacking capacity, qualifying parents of dependent children, and families of holders of specified highly qualified, investment or EU Blue Card permits.
Applications must establish the family relationship, suitable accommodation and sufficient means of subsistence. The family member’s location and immigration position also affect the available procedure.
Families of Portuguese and EU citizens must be assessed under the applicable family residence framework.- EU Citizens & Family Members.
I review each family’s circumstances to identify the appropriate route, timing and documentation
before an application is submitted.
