Non-EEA Citizens

Citizens from outside the EEA (European Economic Area) can immigrate to Portugal, though the process is a little more complex than for Europeans and certain conditions must be met.

Retirement

Those wishing to live in Portugal on retirement income such as a pension, or who have sufficient funds to support themselves, can apply for a D7 visa.

This enables the holder to obtain a residence permit in Portugal, which will initially be issued for a year. After this, the holder may renew twice for 2 years each time. At the end of this 5 year period, the holder can apply for permanent residence.

The D7 visa is considerably faster and less costly to obtain than a Golden Visa.

To apply for a D7 visa, you must start the process from abroad, applying to your local Portuguese consulate.

Once you have your residence permit, immediate family members may join you and apply for residence permits based on the "family reunification" rules.

Applicants for retirement need to prove their receipt of a pension, that the funds are sufficient to support them and that they have suitable private health insurance in place. I can advise on the exact requirements for your situation, help you prepare the necessary documents and attend appointments with you once you are in Portugal. I can also assist with associated tasks such as obtaining a taxpayer ID number (NIF), opening a local bank account and even buying a property.

Work & Business

There are a variety of options available for those who wish to work or run a business in Portugal.

The D7 visa can be applied for by those wishing to work on a self-employed basis in Portugal. You must start the application from your present location of residence (outside Portugal). You will need to prove how you intend to support yourself in Portugal.

For those wishing to start or move an existing to Portugal, there is the D2 visa. For this you will need a suitable business plan that can be approved by the Portuguese authorities.

There is also a startup visa available for high-tech entrepreneurs in fast growing technology and science fields. This process is relatively quick if you can get your company accepted by one of many approved startup accelerator programmes in Portugal.

In all of these cases, you can bring immediate family members with you under "family reunification" rules. You can also gain permanent residence after 5 years and apply for citizenship if you meet the criteria.
