Brexit - Again...

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

The new PM Boris Johnson has pledged to take the UK out of the EU on 31st October 2019 with or without a deal. The likelihood of a 'no deal' Brexit has therefore increased.

The UK is ramping up the rhetoric of 'no deal' on 31st October. If MPs opposed to it cannot work together to stop it, the default position will be that the UK crashes out with 'no deal'.

For UK citizens who wish to establish residency in Portugal under EU rules, time is running short. In order to register your residency in Portugal, you must have evidence of how you will support yourself (e.g. self-employed, retired with pension, etc.) and also proof of residential address in Portugal. A short-term AirBnB or hotel stay is not enough, it must be a lease for at least six months or a house you own. It takes time to find a suitable residence and agree terms and then move in. So those still in the UK are running out of time - you should allow at least a month and preferably more to find suitable accommodation and get registered as residents.

Of course, the UK may agree to another extension after all (it could be a bluff), but this could be the final deadline, and the rhetoric is certainly stronger than before.
